Extra attention must be paid in the case of older adults
It is scary with the constant mutation of the COVID-19 and the increasing list of its signs. It is important to stay cautious about the symptoms of COVID-19. The signs of this respiratory infecting virus generally appear in a solid pattern & staying conscious can prevent you from acquiring a severe viral infection. But recent findings states that the signs of COVID-19 in older people can be different compared to others. Look for these below symptoms of covid 19 in elderly,
Older people missing these signs of infection
Everyone is prone to develop COVID infection, but the risk of the complexity is more considerable amongst older people and people with a flawed immune system. A recent study proposes that a particular sign of COVID-19 may show up differently for older people (above 65), making it easy to ignore. We all know that high temperature is the initial sign of coronavirus. Still, older people(above 65) have a lower(decreased) temperature, which indicates they are experiencing fever at a decreased(low) temperature. This could be ignored or confused with common fever easily.
New study and research
Mayo Clinic states that any person’s average body temperature stays between (37°C to 37.2°C) 98.6 to 99 degrees Fahrenheit. If the body temperature increases to 100.04 Fahrenheit (38°C), it is recognized as a fever. Despite that, a study made by King’s College London proposes that the average temperature of a person and what constitutes fever may differ from age to age.
The scientist in the study says, “aging impacts the temperature in health and critical infection.” So, the researchers concluded that the threshold of 99.32 degrees is equal to 100.04 degrees Fahrenheit in people over 65, and it could be a symptom of infection/disease.
Avoiding low-grade fever may double your risk.
Data submitted by the study indicates that about 55 % of people with COVID-19 encounter fever in the initial days. This could be a significant error in older people because the temperature threshold is high for them. There are high possibilities that adults (greater than 65) will not get a high fever, i.e.,100.04 degrees Fahrenheit. It would limit coronavirus detection and even decrease the chance of getting proper treatment, which could be dangerous for older people.
The senior citizens (above 65) should be more careful. Even the slightest variation in their temperature or health should not be considered carelessly.
Delirium an early sign in adults
In the case of older adults, you must look for delirium symptoms, which is hinted to be an early caution symptoms of covid 19 in elderly older patients. A study points out that delirium was the only symptom in many older corona patients—delirium condition. It was associated with confusion, disorientation, inattention, and other cognitive malformation.
The finding of this study suggests that COVID-19 patients in the hospitals, particularly those who required ventilators, are identified to be getting delirium. This could be due to the isolation/separation imposed to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
